A memorial service for Madge Watts will be held at the Players Theatre, Meroo Street Bomaderry on Wednesday 23/3/16 at 12pm.
It is with a heavy heart, that we must inform you of the passing of Mrs Madge Watts OAM. Mrs Watts was one of the founding members of the Nowra Players and continued to be actively involved with our group for the next 65 years. In her life time, Mrs Watts touched many lives within our Nowra Players family and the wider Shoalhaven Community.
In 1951, Mrs Watts was among a group of local people who met to discuss plays, which sparked an idea to perform a play themselves and so the Nowra Players was born. Mrs Watts was heavily involved in the Nowra Players for the next 65 years. Mrs Watts served as President and secretary several times. She acted in 53 plays and directed 8 productions. In 2001, to mark our 50th Anniversary and in her 80s, Mrs Watts directed the same play that first launched the Nowra Players all of those years ago.
In 1990, Mrs Watts was awarded an OAM for her services to the arts. The Nowra Player’s Theatre foyer was named the “Madge Watts Foyer” in her honour. Mrs Watts commented “who would have thought, all those years ago, when a few enthusiastic play readers thought that they would like to put on a production, we would still be doing it in our own, beautiful, fully equipped theatre.”
Mrs Watts has been described as a mentor, superb actress, amazing director and great friend. The tributes that have been flowing are a solid testament to her place in our hearts and community.
Our sincerest condolences go out to her family.
A memorial service for Mrs Watts will be held at the Players Theatre, Meroo Street Bomaderry at 12pm. All are welcome. After the service light refreshments will be served.
